Hats, Teas and History: (Grades 1-6)
It’s time to call on Mrs. Waterhouse’s beautiful 1884 home! Tour this gorgeous Victorian home while learning about Victorian customs and etiquette. Your visit culminates in a tea party, complete with flowered hats to wear and keep, tea cookies, and other pastry snacks. (Minimum of 5 Participants)

Try-It Hats and Teas: (Brownie Girl Scouts)
Our traditional Hats and Teas program goes green with this Girl Scouts Only program. Earn your Brownie Try-It badge while exploring the wonders of the past. Take a tour through the historic Waterhouse Residence built in 1884, learn about Victorian Etiquette, and the importance of manners today. Practice your manners at a tea party, complete with flowered hats, cookies, pastries, and a variety of teas. Receive your try-it badge and Maitland Historical Society’s signature patch. (Minimum 5 scouts)

Tour the Waterhouse Residence with our of experienced docents, then take a look at Mr. Waterhouse’s Carpentry Shop and finish your tour by making your very own toolbox, birdhouse, or napkin holder, similar to the way that Mr. Waterhouse did.

Waterhouse Residence and Carpentry Shop Tour:
Travel back to the era of Calling Cards, Corsets, and Courting Sofas with a visit to Maitland Historical Society’s beautifully constructed Victorian era home. Your tour of the Historic Waterhouse Residence Museum is guided by a trained docent and will allow your class or group to see what life was like in the 1880’s. Your visit is enhanced with a trip to William Waterhouse’s Carpentry Shop where he kept the tools that built the Waterhouse Residence and other Maitland buildings. You’ll get to see how the tools worked and find out about Mr. Waterhouse’s chosen occupation.

Maitland Historical Museum and Telephone Museum Tour
Experience new and exciting facts about the past. Tour the Maitland Historical Museum. The Museum features Maitland on the Move a permanent exhibition tracing Maitland history through time. The Historical Museum also highlights different periods of Central Florida history by bringing in at least two different traveling exhibitions each year. Call the Museum to find out what exhibition is currently featured. While visiting the Historical Museum, take time to see the Maitland Telephone Museum, which showcases the development of the Winter Park Telephone Company and the technological growth of Maitland.

Meet William Waterhouse:
Watch as Mr. Waterhouse discusses his life as a Union Soldier, as a resident of the Andersonville Prison in Georgia, and moving his family to Maitland. This one-man play is available as an addition to your Waterhouse Residence Tour or as a presentation for your school or organization. Please book this program at least 30 days in advance.

Maitland’s History Sleuths MHS (3rd-6th grade):
This 45-minute classroom presentation will give your students a chance to use their critical thinking skills, appreciate the modern advances we have today, and have a good time doing it! Your class will be split up into sleuthing teams. Each team will be given an object and it will be their job to deduce where it came from, what it was used for, and who might have used it. Students are encouraged to try their objects out, to handle them, and to have fun!

Carpentry Crew on the Go
This 2 hour program takes place at your school. Your students will be introduced to tool safety, proper tool handling techniques, and the life of Mr. William Waterhouse, a Central Florida carpenter, who helped to build the town of Maitland in the late 1880’s. After a short presentation about Central Florida history, students will be given a chance to create a craft from wood with historic carpentry techniques used by Mr. Waterhouse.

All Maitland Historical Society Programs meet the following elementary Sunshine State Standards and FCAT factors. A more detailed description of standards utilized in specific programming is available upon request.
Sunshine State Standards: The student understands historical chronology and the historical perspective. The Student understands the history of Florida and its people.
FCAT Factors: Students use context clues to determine word meanings. Students recognize cause and effect relationships. Students identify similarities and differences among characters, settings, and events.
Wine at the Waterhouse:
Visitors tour the Waterhouse Residence & Carpentry Shop Museums learning about the customs of the Victorian period. Their tour is followed by a gathering of guests for wine and cheese while overlooking Lake Lily or in the Museum Courtyard. This special event can be a great holiday gathering, a corporate event, a networking event, or just a nice way to gather with friends.

Tools of the Trade:
This is an interactive, comprehensive woodworking and team-building program for corporate offices that presents techniques and building methods used in Central Florida during the late 19th century. This program includes a guided tour of the Waterhouse Residence Museum and concludes with participants building a unique woodworking project. Components of this program vary and can include a day or half day long experience including both locations, lunch, and a team building activity.

Pink Teas:
Our Victorian Pink Teas include a tour of the Waterhouse, followed by a delightful tea. The pink tea gets its name from Sarah Waterhouse who, in her desire to help the budding community of Maitland, threw a pink tea to raise money for a bell for the First Presbyterian Church of Maitland.
Light Pink Tea:
Scones, croissants, jam, cream, and teas are served. $14.00/person
Pink Tea:
Sweets, scones, croissants, jam, cream, and teas are served. $18.00/person
Deluxe Pink Tea:
This tea includes all of the pink tea fare with the addition of finger sandwiches. $20.00/person
Red Hats Pink Tea:
This pink tea includes all of the treats of the deluxe pink tea. All participants will also receive a decorated hat. $22.00/person
